Nook’s participation and contribution to club cricket in Christchurch was immense.
As a player, he was a high-scoring batsman for the Merivale Papanui Cricket Club in a career that began in 1976-77. His regular scoring saw him selected in the Christchurch Suburban representative team from 1976-77 to 1979-80.
He was to make a significant impact off the field both as a club administrator and as an umpire. He served on his club committee from 1977 to 1992 in various roles including Club Captain, Vice President and President. His forte was in fund-raising and his efforts led to numerous contributions to the club facilities. He was a Life Member of the Merivale Papanui CC.
He also carried out groundsman’s duties at Edgar Macintosh Park for a period of time and, much later, around 2010 at Burnside Oval for the Burnside West University CC.
Nook was also a successful umpire. He was a member of the Canterbury Cricket Umpires’ and Scorers’ Association. As an active umpire, Nook reached the First-Class level as well as on the New Zealand Cricket B panel. He served on the Executive for several seasons including as Treasurer and was President from 1993-95. He was made a Life Member in 2003.
At the time of Nook’s death, he was the association’s Patron.
